Our Story

A Journey of Faith Since 1959.

Sungkomen Baptist Church is located in Mokokchung which is the district headquarters of the Ao-Nagas. It is a vibrant community church that believes and practices the ideals enshrined in the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Our Church had a very humble beginning on March 17, 1959, at the house of Mr. Imtisang. It was initially started under the name Garage Fellowship, rightly fitting to the founder members who were mostly Drivers and Mechanics of the then-District Administration. In the beginning, they used to gather in a house and later on 14 women contributed Rs.5/- each and bought some benches, and shifted to a vacant government quarter in 1962. The following persons were the first members of the church:

  • Imtisang
  • Imsu jamir
  • Mokoksangba
  • K.I Wati
  • Imshiangba
  • Nangshikokba
  • Imtiakum
  • Nungshisosang
  • Pusotemjen
  • Ajosangba
  • Lanusobo
  • Jongpongmar
  • Rosenali.

Today our Church has grown into a dynamic lively community of close to 800 households and 2500+ members. We gather to the all-round needs of its members. We also partner with mission agencies and church associations to spread the gospel and fulfill the great commission.
